Genre Study: Horror
Horror is the genre which focuses on the emotion of fear. Horrors are easily identified by the use of props, lighting, character and setting. Props are often powerful when it comes to creating a horror film as there are so many different ones to use. For example, in The Purge: Anarchy (2014) props such as masks and guns are used throughout the whole film. Other props that can be used in a horror film are dolls, chains, knives and swords. Lighting is also powerful when creating a horror film as most horrors include quite dull
and dark lighting to create a sense of mystery and eerieness. Darkness is used a lot in the film
Paranormal Activity (2007) during the night scenes as most of the
paranormal events take place at this time. This is effective as it makes
the audience fearful but also anchored into the film.

The Purge (2013) is a science fiction, action, thriller, horror film. This film is set in America where crime has been legalised for 12 hours. During the 12 hours, most crime takes place but murder is the most common. This film includes a lot of violence which is typical for a horror film and is set at night amongst the streets in darkness. Props such as masks, knives and guns are used throughout to give the audience a sense of fear and panic. As well as props and violence, editing such as sound effects is used throughout this film. Using sound effects in a horror can change a scene and make it more fearful. These sound effects can include music, crying, screaming and sounds of chains. Sound effects are often disorted in a horror as it makes a much more eerie atmosphere. This film particularly uses a lot of horror codes and conventions which is why it is so successful.
